The Tohono O'odham Nation's 1.2 million-square-foot Desert Diamond Casino West Valley opened Feb. 19 after more than two years of construction. It replaced the nearby interim casino, which opened. The Desert Diamond Casino West Valley opening was a full house, literally and figuratively. The Las Vegas-style casino was literally a full house, as the crowd on opening night filled the sprawling casino on the Feb. 19 opening night.

The new Desert Diamond Casino West Valley — with more than 1,100 slot machines, 36 poker-style tables and 48 blackjack-style tables — will open at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The $400-million, 1.2-million-square-foot casino, at 93rd and Northern avenues near Glendale's sports and entertainment district, will replace the neighboring casino that since 2015 has offered slot machines but no table games.

The current casino will close at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The new, bigger casino will be able to hold about 10,000 people.

All slot machines, table games and restaurants will be open and ready to go, Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise spokeswoman Treena Parvello said in a statement.

This will give northwest Valley residents a chance to play table games closer to home. The only other West Valley casino is Vee Quiva, near 51st Avenue on the Gila River Indian Reservation.

The Tohono O'odham Nation's new Desert Diamond Casino will include:

  • More than 1,100 slot machines.
  • 380 bingo seats.
  • 36 poker-style tables.
  • 48 blackjack-style tables.
  • A massive bar with a second-story mezzanine overlooking the casino floor.
  • A food court.
  • A steakhouse.
  • A sports bar.
  • An Italian restaurant.

Plans for a resort, convention center

The tribe plans to start work on a full-service resort, convention space and possibly a concert venue on the site, but there is no construction timeline yet.

Once that phase is finished, the project's total footprint would be about 2.3 million square feet.

It's not yet clear what will happen to the existing casino, which was originally designed to be a warehouse. Casino staff use an off-site warehouse, so the existing building may be converted to an events center.

Arizona continues to launch new casinos, and residents of Glendale are just over two months away from being able to gamble at one of the state’s largest gaming houses Desert Diamond Casino in West Valley. The Glendale full-scale casino will officially open its doors on Feb. 19.

The final stage of construction for the $400 million Desert Diamond Casino is near completion. Owned and operated by the Tohono O’odham Nation, Desert Diamond’s 75,000-square-foot gaming floor will be one of the largest casinos in The Grand Canyon State.

Desert Diamond Casino to Provide About 2,000 Jobs

Diamond

The Tohono O’odham Nation launched an interim casino adjacent to the Desert Diamond construction site in 2015. That facility employs approximately 700 people and continues to operate through the final stages of Desert Diamond’s construction.

In late November, it was announced that the new Desert Diamond Casino will employ a total of 2,000 workers, creating an additional 1,300 positions.

The news that the Tohono O’odham Nation is hiring 1,300 people for their Desert Diamond Casino is spreading fast in the West Valley area of Glendale. Don Ayers, general manager of the new casino, said that they started hiring for hundreds of positions, AZCentral of Arizona reported.

Ayers said the 1,300 new jobs are for a variety of positions, including food and beverage services, environmental services, table games, slot games, bingo and security. The most positions are in the food and beverage sector.

The new jobs are a mix of full-time permanent and part-time positions.

Arizona Casino Decade in The Making

The Tohono O’odham Gaming Enterprise, an organization of the Tohono O’odham Nation, first proposed the Desert Diamond Casino in January 2009. It initially sparked a backlash from some Glendale officials and state representatives.

Years of lawsuits ensued. During this time, the tribe was granted permission to build a temporary casino in 2015. In May 2017, tribal and state leaders reached a settlement. The Desert Diamond Casino in West Valley broke ground in December 2017.

The $400 million casino will feature a poker room with 36 tables, 48 blackjack tables, a 400-seat bingo hall and 1,136 new slot machines. There is also a VIP lounge with a gaming area.

In addition, Arizona’s newest casino will boast a food court, a sports bar, a 24-hour cafe, an Italian restaurant and a steakhouse. The Desert Diamond Casino in West Valley will also boast a full-service resort, though there is no timeline on the construction for the resort.
